The art of making tatted lace dates back almost to the beginnings of humanity. Basic knots were used in most cultures around the world. The knots were first formed with the fingers. The craft of knotting was developed as early as the 15th century. Coarse thread or ribbon was knotted and then couched to a background fabric. It was the Pilgrims who brought the craft to America.
During the 18th century, the first rings were invented, along with the picot, although it was not used to connect the rings at the time. Industrialization brought the development of the spinning mills with much more evenly spun threads, particularly the cotton thread. This was crucial in the development of fine tatting.
The 19th century brought the invention of the chain. T here were many patterns published for tatting in a variety of magazines and books. Tatting was very popular in those days. Tatting gave the women the opportunity to make somethings that was useful as well as elegant and pleasant looking.
Today, this beautiful and delicate form of lacework is more popular than ever.
